How-to guide

What Log Length Do I Need for My Stove?

Check your stove's manual: every maker gives a maximum log length, and it varies a lot. In the stoves we checked it runs from 200 mm on Stovax's smallest Stockton to 550 mm on Charnwood's large Island III, with most 5 kW stoves taking about 250 to 400 mm. Logs should lie flat with air at both ends and never touch the glass.

How do I find the right log length?

  1. Check the manual. Stovax says the maximum log size for its stoves is given in the user's instructions, and that it's specific to the size of stove and model. Most makers also list it on the product page.
  2. No manual? Measure the firebox. Measure the inside from side to side and front to back, where the logs sit. Allow room at both ends: Morsø says logs should be short enough to lie flat over the embers with air at both ends.
  3. Check the logs sit clear of the glass. Morsø says to avoid wood so long that it presses against the glass when the door is closed.
  4. Split thick logs. Thinner logs burn more cleanly. See the thickness advice below.

Figures from each maker's manual, spec sheet or product page. Check your own model, as sizes change between versions.

How thick should logs be?

Thinner than most people think. Burnright says 100 to 150 mm across is best, and its log size page explains that a big log has less surface for its volume, so less of the gas burns, which means lower efficiency and more emissions. Stove makers often go smaller:

  • Stovax: logs no more than about 10 cm across, and 75 mm in its Stockton manual.
  • Charnwood: 75 mm in its C-Four manual.
  • Morsø: 8 to 12 cm, and always split anything over 10 cm.

Follow your manual where it gives a figure.

What happens if logs are too long or too big?

  • Black glass. Stovax lists a fire that touches the glass as a cause of blackening, and Charnwood says logs overhanging the front fence will blacken it. See how to clean log burner glass.
  • Blocked air. Stovax says not to load fuel above the log guard and the air inlets at the back of the firebox, and Hunter says to keep wood below the top of the rear brick.
  • Smoke. Stovax says overloading can cause excess smoke, and Burnright says an overloaded stove sends large amounts of smoke up the chimney.
  • Damage. Woodwarm warns not to overload, as heat damage can occur.

Does log size matter in a smoke control area?

It can. An exempt stove is approved to burn a stated fuel, and some listings set the log size. Defra's listing for one exempt stove allows dry, split logs up to 25 cm long and 10 cm across. See Defra exempt stoves explained.

Will your logs fit my stove?

Our logs are cut to a consistent size for easy stacking. If you're not sure they'll fit, check your stove's maximum log length and give us a call with the make and model before you order.

Questions

What's the most common log length in the UK?

Many merchants cut to about 25 cm, or 10 inches. Surrey County Council sells what it calls standard 10 inch logs from its woodlands.

Will 25 cm logs fit my stove?

In most of the stoves we checked, yes, but Stovax's smallest Stocktons take 200 mm logs. Check your manual.

Should logs touch the back of the stove?

No. Morsø says logs should lie flat with air at both ends, and HETAS says to leave space for air circulation.

How big should kindling be?

Smaller still. See our kindling guide.
