Logs for Huddersfield homes
With a Defra-exempt stove, a tonne bag of mixed hardwood (oak, ash, beech, sycamore and birch) is the simplest way to stock up for winter. Softwood costs less per bag and catches quickly, so many people light the fire with softwood and then add hardwood. If your stove or fire is not exempt, you need an authorised smokeless fuel in Kirklees.

Smoke control in Huddersfield
Kirklees Council says the whole of Kirklees is a smoke control area, with only a few exempted properties. In practice that means:
- Wood is not an authorised fuel, so you can burn logs only in an exempt appliance, such as a Defra-exempt stove.
- Open fires and other stoves need an authorised smokeless fuel, such as anthracite or a fuel on Defra's list.
- In law, smoke from a chimney there can bring a penalty of £175 to £300, and buying unauthorised fuel for a stove that isn't exempt can bring a fine of up to £1,000. To check whether your property is one of the exempted ones, contact its pollution team.
