Logs for Rossendale homes
With a Defra-exempt stove, the tonne bag of mixed hardwood is the simplest way to stock up for winter. On steep streets, or where we can't get close to the door, a barrow bag or net bags are easier to move. With an open fire or a stove that isn't exempt, choose an authorised smokeless fuel.

Smoke control in Rossendale
Rossendale Borough Council says Rossendale is a designated smoke control area, and its 2025 air quality report says that covers the whole borough except for a few outlying rural properties. In practice:
- Wood is not an authorised fuel, so you can burn logs only in an exempt appliance, such as a Defra-exempt stove.
- Open fires and other stoves need an authorised smokeless fuel, such as anthracite or a fuel on Defra's list.
- In law, smoke from a chimney there can bring a penalty of £175 to £300, and buying unauthorised fuel for a stove that isn't exempt can bring a fine of up to £1,000.
- The council doesn't publish a map. If you think your home may be one of the exceptions, contact its environmental health team or check the Defra map.
