Logs for Pontefract homes
With a Defra-exempt stove that's lit most evenings, the XL tonne bag holds the most logs and means fewer deliveries. The standard tonne bag of mixed hardwood is the usual winter order. With an open fire or a stove that isn't exempt, choose an authorised smokeless fuel instead.

Smoke control in Pontefract
Wakefield Council says the Wakefield district is covered by a smoke control order, so the rules apply in Pontefract, Knottingley, Featherstone and the rest of the district. In autumn 2026 the council consulted on replacing its old orders, made between 1958 and 1994, with a single district-wide order. If that goes ahead, it starts no sooner than six months after it's approved.
- Wood is not an authorised fuel, so you can burn logs only in an exempt appliance, such as a Defra-exempt stove.
- Open fires and other stoves need an authorised smokeless fuel, such as anthracite or a fuel on Defra's list.
- In law, smoke from a chimney there can bring a penalty of £175 to £300, and buying unauthorised fuel for a stove that isn't exempt can bring a fine of up to £1,000.
- A few villages with Pontefract and Knottingley postcodes, such as Kirk Smeaton and Brotherton, are in North Yorkshire, so check those with North Yorkshire Council.
