Logs for Holme Valley homes
With a Defra-exempt stove, the tonne bag of mixed hardwood is the usual winter order. On steep lanes, or where we can't get close to the door, a barrow bag or net bags are easier to move. With an open fire or a stove that isn't exempt, choose an authorised smokeless fuel.

Smoke control in the Holme Valley
Kirklees Council says Kirklees is a smoke control area, with only a few exempted properties. It says wood can be burned only in exempt appliances, and that kindling can be used in Kirklees. In practice:
- Wood is not an authorised fuel, so you can burn logs only in an exempt appliance, such as a Defra-exempt stove.
- Open fires and other stoves need an authorised smokeless fuel, such as anthracite or a fuel on Defra's list.
- In law, smoke from a chimney there can bring a penalty of £175 to £300, and buying unauthorised fuel for a stove that isn't exempt can bring a fine of up to £1,000. To check whether your property is one of the exempted ones, contact the council's pollution team.
