Logs for Manchester homes
With a Defra-exempt stove, the tonne bag of mixed hardwood is the best value for a winter of fires. In a flat or a terrace with no outside space, 40-litre net bags are easier to carry and store. With an open fire or a stove that isn't exempt, you need an authorised smokeless fuel.

Smoke control in Manchester
Manchester City Council says the whole of Manchester has been a smoke control area since 1985. Trafford Council says its whole borough is one too, and Salford City Council says the majority of Salford is covered. In practice:
- You can burn logs only in an exempt appliance, such as a Defra-exempt stove. Manchester City Council says to get confirmation from the supplier that your stove is exempt.
- If your appliance isn't exempt, you can burn only smokeless or authorised fuel.
- In law, smoke from a chimney there can bring a penalty of £175 to £300, and buying unauthorised fuel for a stove that isn't exempt can bring a fine of up to £1,000.
