Logs for York homes
If you have a Defra-approved stove, a tonne bag of mixed hardwood is the usual winter order, and our logs are kiln dried to below 20% moisture. If you have an open fire or a stove that is not Defra-approved, you will need smokeless fuel from 1 November 2026, so order that instead. A net of kindling helps either one get going.

York becomes a smoke control area on 1 November 2026
City of York Council says the whole council area becomes a smoke control area from 1 November 2026. About 80% of households were already inside one. From that date it is an offence to let smoke escape from a chimney for long periods anywhere in York. What it means for you:
- Defra-approved stove: keep burning dry, seasoned wood. The council says retail firewood should carry the Ready to Burn label.
- Multi-fuel stove that is not Defra-approved: switch to an authorised smokeless fuel.
- Open fire: switch to smokeless fuel. A little dry kindling to light it is fine, but not logs.
- Not sure about your stove? Look for a Defra plate or sticker, check the manufacturer's documents, or search Defra's online list.
