Firewood Price per Cubic Metre Calculator

Divide the price, including delivery, by the volume in cubic metres. A bag 80 cm on each side holds 0.51 m³, so a £120 bag works out at about £234 per loose cubic metre. Compare loose with loose and stacked with stacked: Forest Research says 1 m³ of loose logs is only about 0.66 m³ stacked. And check the logs are dry, or you're paying for water.

Enter any seller's price and bag size to see what you're really paying per cubic metre.

Bulk bags are usually sold by their sides in cm. Net bags are usually sold in litres.
Is that loose or stacked?

£234 per loose m³

That's 0.51 m³ of loose logs, or about £355 per stacked m³. Loose logs take up more room than stacked ones, so compare like with like.

How do I work out the price per cubic metre?

  1. Find the volume. For a cube-shaped bag, multiply the three sides in centimetres and divide by 1,000,000. An 80 cm bag is 80 × 80 × 80 = 512,000 cm³, or 0.51 m³. For a bag sold in litres, divide by 1,000: a 40-litre net bag is 0.04 m³.
  2. Add delivery. A cheap bag with a big delivery charge can cost more than a dearer one delivered free.
  3. Divide the price by the volume. £120 for 0.51 m³ is about £234 per cubic metre.
Bag Volume
40-litre net bag 0.04 m³
80 × 80 × 80 cm bulk bag 0.51 m³
90 × 90 × 90 cm bulk bag 0.73 m³
1 × 1 × 1 m bulk bag 1 m³

Loose or stacked: why it matters

Logs thrown loose into a bag leave lots of air between them. Forest Research says 1 m³ of loose logs is about 0.66 m³ stacked, so a stacked cubic metre holds about one and a half times as much wood as a loose one. A price per stacked cubic metre will always look higher. Make sure you're comparing loose with loose, or stacked with stacked.

Why dry wood is better value

Forest Research says well seasoned logs can have about twice the energy of green ones. Cheap wet logs mean you're partly paying for water, and they'll need drying before you can burn them. In England, wood sold in units under 2 m³ must be certified Ready to Burn at 20% moisture or less, says GOV.UK. See firewood moisture content.

What else should I compare?

  • The wood. Hardwood is denser than softwood, so a bag of it holds more wood and more heat. See hardwood vs softwood logs.
  • The log length. Logs that are too long for your stove need cutting down. See what log length you need.
  • Delivery terms. Check the minimum order, the delivery charge and how long it takes.
  • The size, not the name. A tonne bag from one seller can be a different size from another's.

Questions

How much is a cubic metre of logs?

It depends on the wood, how dry it is and the seller. The table in the calculator above shows our current prices per cubic metre, worked out from our live prices.

Is a tonne bag a tonne of logs?

No. Tonne bag is just the name for this kind of bulk bag, and sellers use different sizes. Compare the dimensions, not the name. Ours is 80 cm on each side, or 0.51 m³.

Is a bigger bag better value?

Usually. At our current prices, the XL tonne bag works out cheapest per cubic metre and net bags the dearest. Buy the biggest bag you can store under cover.

Should I include delivery?

Yes. Add any delivery charge to the price before you divide by the volume. Our delivery is free on orders of £75 or more within 40 miles of our yard.
