Firewood Near Me: 7 Checks Before You Buy

The best local firewood is dry, sold in a clear quantity at a fair price per cubic metre, and delivered when the seller says it will be. Before you order from anyone nearby, check these seven things. They take a few minutes and save you paying for wet wood or a half-empty bag.

Where can I buy firewood near me?

Where What you get Watch out for
Garages, garden centres and supermarkets Small bags, often kiln dried The highest price per cubic metre
Local log yards and merchants Net, barrow and tonne bags, delivered or collected Bag sizes that vary between sellers
Tree surgeons and farms Large loose loads, often cheap Wood that may be green or part-seasoned and need a year or more to dry

The 7 checks

  1. Is it 20% moisture or less? Ask the seller for a reading. Dry wood burns hotter and cleaner and is kinder to your stove and chimney. See firewood moisture content.
  2. Is it Ready to Burn certified? In England, wood sold in volumes under 2 m³ must carry the Ready to Burn logo and a certification number. You can look sellers up on Woodsure's Find a Supplier page. See what is Ready to Burn?.
  3. How much wood is in the bag? "A bag of logs" means very different amounts from one seller to the next. Ask for the size in litres, cubic metres or centimetres, and whether the logs are tipped in loose or stacked, since stacked bags hold more wood.
  4. What's the price per cubic metre? Divide the price by the volume. It's the only fair way to compare a net bag from a garage with a tonne bag from a yard.
  5. Is it hardwood or softwood? Hardwood costs more per bag but burns longer. Ask which species are in the mix. See hardwood vs softwood logs.
  6. What does delivery cost, and where will the bag go? Check the delivery charge, the minimum order, how soon it will arrive, and whether the driver can get the bag to where you need it. See how log delivery works.
  7. Is it a real, local business? Look for a yard address you could visit, a phone number that gets answered, and recent reviews from people nearby.

Questions

Is it cheaper to buy firewood locally?

Often, yes. A local yard has less distance to cover, and bulk bags cost less per cubic metre than small bags from a shop.

Is it better to buy logs in bulk?

If you have dry storage, yes. A tonne bag costs far less per cubic metre than buying net bags through the winter.

What's the cheapest way to buy firewood?

Buying in bulk and collecting it yourself. A large loose load of wet wood is cheaper still, but only if you can store it for a year or more while it dries.
